At least 13 flights have been diverted out of the New Delhi airport this evening due to movement of VIPs, news agency ANI reported.
The diversions took place between 5:30 pm to 6:15 pm, however the delays continued for several hours with flights subsequently getting affected.
Accordingly, the Delhi Airport’s website showed nearly 90 domestic flights arriving at the Indira Gandhi International Airport had been delayed or diverted.
‘Due to air traffic congestion consequent to VVIP movement at Delhi airport, some of our flights are affected,’ Jet Airways tweeted, requesting passengers to check their flight status before arriving at the airport, reports NDTV.
Delhi airport, which has three runways, is the busiest in the country and handles around 1,200 flight movements everyday.
The airport is likely to see even more congestion and delays in the coming days with the maintenance of runway 11/29 scheduled from November 7 to November 10 which will see flight movements come down to just 45 per hour.
