Ahmedabad: An Special Investigation Team (SIT) court today gave life imprisonment to two accused in 2002 Godhra train carnage. Three others were acquitted by the court.

The five persons put on trial were Hussain Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhamedi, Faruk Dhantiya, Faruk Bhana and Imran alias Sheru Bhatuk, all of whom are residents of Godhra, Gujarat.

The accused had been absconding from the day of the incident. There are eight other accused who are said to be absconding.

Earlier, a special SIT court convicted 31 people on March 1, 2011, out of whom 11 were awarded death sentences and 20 life imprisonment. The court also acquitted 63 people in the case.

In October last year, the Gujarat High Court commuted the death sentence awarded to 11 convicts to life term while upholding the life sentence awarded to 20 others by the special SIT court in 2011.

Fifty-nine people travelling in the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express, mostly kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya, were burnt alive at the Godhra railway station on February 27, 2002. The incident had triggered widespread communal riots across the state. source: oneindia
