2G a case of judicial overreach, says Congress

Uncategorized

After the acquittals in 2G scam case, the Congress feels that its UPA government was a victim of judicial overreach. The anguish was visible as Congress leaders welcomed the dismissal of the case by a special CBI court.

The Congress said the government had no role in the investigation of the 2G case, which was based on a draft report of the Comptroller and Auditor General that was leaked in a section of media.

“The CBI was working under the direct monitoring of the Supreme Court; the special prosecutor was also appointed by the Supreme Court to conduct the trial. The government was nowhere in the picture,” Congress leader Vivek Tankha, a former additional solicitor general in the UPA regime, told reporters.

Tankha said the case also took a toll on investments in the country with many foreign companies shutting shop leading to huge financial losses and job cuts.

Former Union minister Anand Sharma said at least three companies owned by foreign governments had threatened to take India to the international court and the WTO as cancellation of 2G licences amounted to violation of bilateral investment protection treaties. (DH News)
