Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future

Lucknow: India celebrates the National Science Day on 28 February every year to commemorate the discovery of the Raman Effect by Nobel laureate and Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman on 28 February 1928. The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”.

Dr Devendra Parmar, Chief Scientist, CSIR-IITR welcomed the gathering. Dr. D Kar Chowdhuri, Chief Scientist CSIR-IITR and Chairman Organising Committee  gave the genesis of celebrating National Science Day and introduced the Chief Guest.

Dr V. P. Kamboj, Chairman, Biotech Consortium India Limited and Former Director, CSIR – Central Drug Research Institute was the chief guest for the function held at CSIR – Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (CSIR– ITR). He delivered a popular science lecture on this occasion.  He gave evocation of the work done by Sir C V Raman and also apprised the student fraternity as to how discovery in science led to technological advancements for the benefit of the society. He cited a number of examples where technology has given solutions to a number of disorders/ailments.

In his presidential remarks, Professor Alok Dhawan, Director, CSIR – IITR emphasized that questioning should be done to move ahead in science and creativity should be nourished to have more like Sir C V Raman in our country. He also asked the students to be a part of the two programmes initiated by the institute for nourishing scientific curiosity and innovativeness.

An exhibition showcasing the services provided and technologies developed by the institute was also organized on the occasion. Undergraduate students from city based institutions were invited to visit the laboratories of the institute and interact with the scientific staff.
