CBSE to integrate art with education

Uncategorized

The central board of secondary education (CBSE) has mandated the schools affiliated to it to reserve a minimum of two periods per week per class for Art education I to X. This comes in the backdrop of the move to introduce “experiential learning pedagogy” from the current academic year.

The board recently declared experiential learning as the theme in its schools for the academic session of 2019-20, with elaborate plans to equip teachers of CBSE schools with new ways of teaching, to make learning a joyful experience for the students.

As part of the move, the board will provide an “extensive training” to the principals of its schools. These principals, in turn, would be expected to ensure that all teachers in their respective schools adopt the new ways of teaching to improve learning outcome of the students.

“Art shall also be integrated with education, by using it as a tool for experiential learning,” CBSE chairperson Anita Karwal said in a letter to parents, stressing that the move was “a clear departure” from the rote learning.

The board has recommended for integration of all forms of art (visual and/or performing), hoping that it would help develop critical thinking and creativity among students to help them get a deeper understanding of the concepts and topics.

The CBSE chairperson urged the parents to co-operate in the implementation of experiential learning pedagogy in schools for holistic development of the students, and asked them to familiarise themselves with the methodology and give feedback to the school.

“The skill requirements of 21st century skills exactly match the skills that a child acquires through art education. Therefore, do encourage your children to take up various forms of art at all levels, as maybe offered by the school,” she said. Source Deccan Herald
