More than 10,000 people took shelter in nearly 105 relief camps in Chennai and other parts of coastal Tamil Nadu since October 31, NDTV reported. The toll in rain-related incidents across the state has mounted to 14, according to IANS.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of Chennai, including Mylapore, Chrompet and Pallavaram on Friday evening, leading to severe traffic jams and waterlogging on Saturday. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami visited several waterlogged areas of the city on Friday, along with Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and other senior officials, PTI reported.
Weather forecasters said that within eight days of heavy rainfall, the city has received 74% rain of the 750mm it gets annually every monsoon, The Economic Times reported.
As the low-pressure area still persists over Sri Lankan coast and adjoining Southwest Bay of Bengal, moderate to heavy thundershowers are possible on Saturday, according to Skymet Weather. Schools and colleges have been shut since October 31 in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts.
On Friday, the Madras High Court had directed the Tamil Nadu government to provide Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the families of the two girls who were electrocuted in Kodungaiyur locality of Chennai.
