Uncategorized

Six terrorists, including the nephew of the Mumbai attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, were shot dead in an encounter with security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district on Saturday.

An Indian Air Force Garud commando was killed and two army personnel were injured in an encounter in Bandipora’s Hajin town. The Garud Commando Force is the special forces unit of the IAF.

Two Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commanders, Zargam and Mehmood, were also among the terrorists killed by the security forces, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police (DGP), SP Vaid, said. He said all the six militants killed in the encounter were Pakistanis.

Arms and ammunition were also recovered during the encounter which is still underway. The shootout began when soldiers cordoned off a neighbourhood in the northern area of Hajin after a tip-off that armed militants were hiding there, said army spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia.

Authorities have ordered the suspension of 2G, 3G and 4G services, in Bandipora in view of the ongoing encounter.

On Friday a terrorist and a police officer were killed on the outskirts of Srinagar during a brief shootout which took place when three terrorists travelling in a car opened fire on a police team.

The anti-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir have continued in the wake of violence by Pakistan-based militants.

SP Vaid had recently said around 170 terrorists were gunned down by the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir this year.
