The West Bengal government has decided to conduct a forensic examination on the body of a contract worker from the state who had died under mysterious circumstances in Kerala last Sunday.
Bankura district Superintendent of Police Sukhendu Heera told DH on Thursday that forensic examination of the dead worker’s body will be conducted once it arrives from Kerala.
“A post mortem examination has already been conducted by the police authorities in Kerala and they have informed us that the tests indicate that the worker had committed suicide. But, the family members of the deceased are not convinced and have claimed that the person was murdered. We will conduct forensic tests on the body after it reaches the state,” said sub dvisional police officer of Bishnupur, S K Das.
A migrant worker from Bankura district, who worked as an electrician in the Alappuzha district of Kerala and has been identified as Hemanta Roy Bagdi, was found dead in the toilet of his house, where he was staying, with his throat slit on December 10.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had on Wednesday said at a gathering in the Bankura district that the state government will provide 100 days’ work along with financial assistance to those workers who have been forced to return home from other states.
The chief minister’s announcement came on the heels of the brutal hacking of a labourer, Mohd Afrajul, in Rajasthan. The labourer, who hailed from Malda district in the state, was later burnt alive.
