Lucknow: A meeting of sugarcane researchers from ICAR – Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow; U.P. Council of Sugarcane Research, Shahjahanpur and its different centres along with high level officials from State Cane Department was organized on April 12, 2017 at 10.30 a.m. at ICAR- IISR premises under the chairmanship of Sh. Suresh Rana, Cane Development and Sugar Industry Minister, Govt. of U.P. In the meeting, Sh. Rana took stock of recent advances made in sugarcane research. He emphasized that the improved cane technology be disseminated to all cane growing areas at a faster speed and for this, he emphasized that a one day workshop be organized at IISR wherein all the cane researchers from IISR, Lucknow and UPCSR, Shahjahanpur along with extension and development officials like DCO and CDI from cane department, all KVK Heads of Uttar Pradesh and all General Manager and G.M. (Cane) from Sugar Mills be invited to participate so that the main technological interventions and action plan be communicated to each worker at the field level. The minister emphasized that sugarcane researchers from central and state level research organizations should work in close collaboration to each other. He also emphasized that the research findings be made simple and be communicated in local and understandable language to the farmers. He also stressed upon that all vital aspects of cane farming be discussed in the workshop from technical, administrative, application ease as well as policy angle and the action will be taken accordingly. He called upon the cane researchers to work in planned but stress free manner by utilizing the collective wisdom of all concerned.
On this occasion, Dr. A.D. Pathak, Director, IISR presented a view of improved technologies and cited the example of a success story of Bihar Seed Cane Production Programme and emphasized that similar type of programme is needed for U.P. state also. Director, UPCSR, Dr. B.L. Sharma also apprised about the varieties developed and seed cane produced annually in U.P. State. Sh. Vipin Kumar Dwivedi, Cane Commissioner, U.P. along with some high level officials were also present during the meeting.
