New Delhi: The United States President Donald Trump showered lavish praises on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, saying the leader brought people of India together as one. He also commended the Modi government for achieving high growth in a billion-strong country.
Donald Trump said that India was a sovereign democracy of a billion people– the largest democracy in the world. He added that India was achieving astounding growth and the PM was working to bring the country together.
“Since India opened its economy it has achieved astounding growth and a new world of opportunity for its expanding middle class, and PM Modi has been working to bring that vast country and all of its people together as one, and he’s working at it very, very successfully indeed,” TOI quoted him as saying.
He was addressing the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit of chief executives in Vietnam. In a veiled attack on China, he said that the United States won’t tolerate trade policies that make Americans lose their jobs and business.
He said that other countries will also have to follow trade rules.
“When the United States enters into a trading relationship with other countries or other peoples, we will from now on expect that our partners will faithfully follow the rules,” he said.
“We expect that markets will be open to an equal degree on both sides and that private investment, not government planners, will direct investment,” he added.
