Karti Chidambaram, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, arrested in the INX media case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was brought to the Byculla prison in Mumbai on Sunday.
A six-member-team with Karti landed at around 10.30am in Mumbai and he was directly taken to the prison.
Karti was brought for a face-to-face confrontation with Indrani Mukherjea, a director of INX Media who is also facing charges of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora. The confrontation lasted for nearly four hours.
According to the CBI, INX Media had approached the chairman of the now dismantled Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) seeking permission for foreign investments from Dunearn Investment (Mauritius) Pte Ltd, NSR-PE Mauritius LLC and New Vernon Pvt. Equity Limited for operating a bouquet of television channels.
INX Media also mentioned its intention to make a downstream financial investment to the extent of 26% of INX News Private Limited.
Karti allegedly received Rs3.5 crore from INX Media, for helping it get Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance in 2007, when it was run by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea. Indrani Mukherjea, an accused in the case, had told a magistrate that Karti had met her in a Delhi hotel and demanded $1 million in bribe for the FIPB clearances. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also registered a money laundering case. (HT)
