DMK President and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s health suffered “transient setback” on Sunday evening, but his vital signs are improving with “active medical support”, doctors treating on him said.
The latest health bulletin issued by the Kauvery Hospital at 9.50 pm said Karunanidhi was being closely monitored and treated by panel of expert doctors.
“There was a transient setback in the clinical condition of Kalaignar Dr M Karunanidhi. With active medical support, his vital signs are normalising. He continues to be closely monitored and treated by the panel of expert doctors,” Dr Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director, Kauvery Hospitals, said in the bulletin.
High drama prevailed outside the Kauvery Hospital on Sunday evening after news trickled in that Karunanidhi’s health has suffered a setback. As hundreds of DMK cadre thronged the hospital area, police presence was strengthened and the men in khaki asked outpatients to leave the hospital premises.
As the atmosphere was charged up outside the hospital, police used loudspeakers to announce that Karunanidhi was doing fine and there was no need to believe rumours.
Earlier in the day, DMK released the picture of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Governor Banwarilal Purohit meeting Karunanidhi at the ICU of Kauvery Hospital.
Karunanidhi (94) was rushed to Kauvery Hospital in the wee hours of Saturday after his blood pressure (BP) dropped. The DMK chief was receiving treatment at his residence for the past two years and doctors noticed a “slight decline” in his health on Thursday evening.
The five-time Tamil Nadu chief minister is also being treated for urinary tract infection and other age-related illness. Karunanidhi has been confined to his home since October 2016 and moves out only for hospital visits to change his tracheostomy tube every six months. DH
