Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM) inspects Doon Hospital

Dehradun: Additional Secretary Health Yugal Kishore informed that taking cognizance of the death of Mrs Suchita, a pregnant woman, wife of Mr. Ramesh, a resident of Mussoorie in gynecology department of Government Medical College, Dehradun on September 19, 2018 and the reported coverage in different newspapers, Mission Director, National Health Mission (NHM) inspected the gynecology department of  Government Medical College, Dehradun on September 20, 2018.

Additional Secretary Health Mr. Pant informed that during the inspection, discussion with doctors of  gynecology department, staff nurses and Principal, Medical college were held besides inspection of labour room, monitoring of blood bank system and records was done. After the inspection of the hospital and records, the followings facts came to light:-

  • This was the second pregnancy of Mrs. Suchita, wife of Mr Ramesh, a resident of Mussoorie
  • Mrs. Suchita was admitted to Doon hospital on September 15, 2018 during the seventh month of her pregnancy. The hemoglobin level of Mrs. Suchita at the time of admittance in the hospital was seven grams/ deciliter. Her blood group was B negative which is a rare blood group. Two units of the blood groups were provided by the Doon Hospital. It has been recorded that reaction happened after transfusion of blood.
  • It has been recorded that Mrs. Suchita after she was admitted in the hospital on Sepetmber 15, 2018 was found missing from her bed and was not allowing for her internal inspection and getting catheter pipe put on her. This resulted in inconvenience to the doctors in treating her.
  • During transfusion of blood on September 18, 2018 she had fever and infection in her lungs but Mrs Suchita was not willing to come to her bed and labour room. An ultrasound test was done on Mrs Suchita on September 19, 2018 in Doon Medical College in which it was found that the weight of baby was mere ( 835 grams).
  • Mrs Suchita during seventh month of her pregnancy on September 19, 2018 delivered a dead baby and her health further deteriorated. Despite giving her CPR, she could not be saved and was declared dead at 6.44 am.
  • Earlier, an ultrasound test on Mrs Suchita was done at Primary Health Centre, Mussoorie on June 26, 2018 and the weight of the baby was recorded. Later another ultrasound was done at Doon Medical College on September 08, 2018 in which it was found that the development of the baby  and its’ weight was less ( 715 grams). The hemoglobin level of Mrs Sucita was only 4 grams/deciliter on September 8, 2018 and two units of blood was given to her.
  • It was found during the inspection that improvement in the labour and operation theatres were required and there was need to complete the under construction labour department.

Additional secretary Mr. Yugal Kishore Pant informed that after the inspection of above mentioned points and to discuss other relevant issues, fixing up of the responsibilities and to check occurrence of such issues and get suggestions, a review committee is proposed to be formed which would have Mother Health advisor and Head of the gynecology department of AIIMS ,Rishikesh as members.
