New Delhi: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will celebrate its 12th Formation Day tomorrow. Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Hansraj Gangaram Ahir, will be the Chief Guest at the function to be held at the Vigyan Bhawan.
The inaugural session will be followed by three technical sessions – i) India’s National Disaster Management Plan (NDMP) and its follow up action, ii) Sharing of Best Practices and Innovative Technologies for Disaster Preparedness and iii) Curtain Raiser for Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR), 2016.
NDMA’s continuous efforts in ‘Building a Safer, Resilient India’ led to India’s first NDMP, unveiled by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi earlier this year. With this, India became one of the first countries to align its National Plan to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR). The first session will focus on the implementation of the Plan and the way forward.
States will make presentations to share their experiences in terms of best practices and innovative technologies for disaster preparedness during the second session.
The third session will serve as a curtain raiser to sensitise States and other stakeholders on the upcoming AMCDRR. India is hosting AMCDRR 2016, the first such conference after the adoption of SFDRR, thus re-affirming its commitment to the cause of DRR.
Dr. P.K. Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, will also address the gathering. A special issue of NDMA’s newsletter ‘Samvad’ will also be released on the occasion.
NDMA, which was formed after the enactment of the Disaster Management Act 2005, is the apex body in the country mandated to lay down policies, plans and guidelines on disaster management. It has played a leading role in generating awareness on issues related to disaster risk reduction.
India is aiming to shape its governance narrative by weaving DRR into its agenda. AMCDRR 2016, scheduled to be held from 3-5 November in New Delhi, will bring issues related to DRR into focus. This increased focus will mean better preparedness and reduced vulnerabilities across regions and sectors. Senior-level officials from various Asian countries, Disaster Management experts and representatives of UN bodies will participate in the Conference.
