Pakistan: 11 security officials killed, 13 injured in suicide attack

Uncategorized

At least eleven security officials were killed and three others injured in a suicide attack near a military camp in Pakistan on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Swat district’s Kabal Tehsil in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the military’s media wing Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement. It said that eight soldiers succumbed to their injuries in hospital, taking the death toll to 11.

Reports suggest that the blast took place near the Pakistan Army’s sports unit situated in the area.

Security forces and police have cordoned off the area and a search operation was launched to arrest the assailants.

The injured persons were taken to Saidu Teaching Hospital in Mingora in Swat. The banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has claimed responsibility for the attack, ‘The Express Tribune’ reported.

Earlier in December, security forces conducted an intelligence-based operation in Swat’s Jahan Abad area and killed two wanted terrorists.

Swat in northwest Pakistan referred to by some as the ‘Switzerland of Pakistan’, is known for its stunning natural beauty.

The valley was briefly controlled by the Taliban between 2007 and 2009.
