Sundernagar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hinted at a crackdown on ‘benami’ properties and said that the Congress party is worried because such assets of its leaders would not be spared in his government. “Their (Congress’) worry is that the benami assets like land, flats, shops they have kept hidden like Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes are not going to be spared,” he said at a rally in Sundernagar in poll-bound Himachal Pradesh.
PM Narendra Modi launched an attack on Congress over corruption at his two election rallies in Himachal Pradesh, saying the party is trying to mislead people about demonetisation. “Congress’ campaign was aimed to mislead people and create an atmosphere against the government before a crackdown on the benami assets accumulated by its leaders,” he said.
Describing Congress as termites, PM slammed the grand old party for observing a “black day” on November, first anniversary of demonetisation, saying it was actually “blackmoney day” for the opposition party. He said that on November 8, Congress has planned to burn his effigies because his sin was that he was fighting corruption.
He added that the Congress is worried as the government has brought a law to curb benami properties. “Therefore, they are creating an atmosphere so that before Modi raises a storm over benami assets, they observe blackmoney day and mislead the people,” he said, adding, “Lighting candles and instigating some people would not stop me.” (Also Read: Rahul Gandhi Hits Out at PM Modi Over Demonetisation And GST, Says November 8 a Sad Day For India)

“I tried to get some information from Congress leaders… some (Congress leaders) lost their bags of Rs 500 notes, some of Rs 1,000 notes. In the meantime, Modi has come with benami law. Their worry is that Modi will start showing results,” PM Modi said.
Modi claimed that there would be many Congress leaders who would have purchased properties in the names of their drivers and others. “The time has come to return to the poor what had been robbed of them. I am going to create a situation that they (Congress leaders) would not be able to reclaim their ‘benami’ assets,” he said.
PM Modi said that people gave him the power to fight corruption in the year 2014 and he is doing that and would continue to do so. “Indians would not trust the Congress party. Such are their sins. You have seen enough of dynastic rule. Now, the time has come to elect people’s government,” he said as the crowd cheered for him.
The prime minister said that the poor are back to work after demonetisation but the rich are angry as he forced them to deposit their bagful of cash in the banks.
