New Delhi: Bangalore-based National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has got a news director. A distinguished educationist, Prof. S C Sharma has been appointed as the new Director of NAAC.
Prof Sharma assumed charge on May 28, 2018 and his appointment will be for five years. He took charge from Dr Latha Pillai, Adviser, NAAC and Director (Acting).
HRD Ministry spokesperson informed that the term of previous Director Prof. D P Singh ended on December 2017.
Prof has about 30 years of rich professional experience as educationist, researcher and as an administrator, who is the former Vice Chancellor of Tumkur University.
As the Vice Chancellor of Tumkur University, Prof. Sharma had undertaken the task of rebuilding the University and establishing the state-of-the-art infrastructure by approaching several entrepreneurs for help.
Gnana Taranga, a virtual university programme is a unique initiative of its kind in the country by Prof. Sharma, which is aimed at enhancing the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by taking the University to the doors of the needy and the poor in rural and remote areas of the district.
This is to recall that the NAAC is an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India to assess and accredit institutions of higher education in the country.
It is an outcome of the recommendations of the National Policy in Education (1986) which laid special emphasis on upholding the quality of higher education in India.
To address the issues of quality, the National Policy on Education (1986) and the Plan of Action (POA-1992) advocated the establishment of an independent national accreditation body.┬аConsequently, the NAAC was established in 1994 with its headquarters at Bangalore.┬аsource:┬аoneindia
