At least one person died after heavy rains lashed several parts of Tamil Nadu today, disrupting normal life. Commuters faced major traffic snarls after the showers, the first big spell after the North East Monsoon set in over the state last week.

The intermittent rains, under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over South West Bay of Bengal, began last night in parts of the state, and intensified this morning.

A 38-year-old man died when a mud wall of his hut collapsed in Thinnaiyoor near Thanjavur district’s Orathanadu which experienced heavy rains, police said.

According to the MeT department, there will be heavy rainfall in Thiruvallur, Nagapattinam, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tanjore, Ramanathapuram and Thiruvarur in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, collectors have declared that all schools and colleges in Chennai and Kancheepuram will remain closed tomorrow.

Dr S Balachandran, drector, Area Cyclone Warning Center told media, “The cyclone formation is in the same place near Sri Lanka. There will be heavy rains in coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. The interior districts will experience moderate rainfall.”

Chennai had faced the wrath of heavy rains due to lack of preparedness in 2015 as well.

The Chennai Corporation has identified about 300 low lying areas, which will be prepared to shift people. One seventy five relief centres have also been been set up.┬аCommuters complained about water stagnation. The usual 30-minute drive took over an hour today.
