New Delhi: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was entered into between Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Goethe Institute on 23rd September 2011, for teaching of German language to the students of Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs).
The MoU envisages introduction in KVs German as one of the third languages from classes VI to VIII. The number of students who studied German language under the MoU in KVs during the last three years is as under:-
Year | Students who studied German as 3rd language |
2012-13 | 17772 |
2013-14 | 36728 |
2014-15 | 50978 |
The MoU was valid for a period of three years and was not renewed thereafter as some of the provisions of the MoU were not consistent with the provisions of the National Policy on Education (NPE), 1968 as well as the provisions of the National Curriculum Framework, 2005 relating to three language formula. However, even in the absence of an MoU, German continues to be the offered as an additional foreign language in the KVs and 11225 & 42918 KV students have been learning German during the year 2015-16 & 2016-17 respectively. As such, absence of an MoU is not in any way adversely impacting the youth in preparing themselves for a globalized world.
