Unidentified people shot dead journalist Naveen Srivastava in Uttar Pradesh’s Bilhaur town on Thursday, ANI reported. The journalist, who was shot by three or four individuals on a motorcycle, died while he was being taken to a hospital.

“Journalist Naveen Srivastava was shot by three or four assailants while he was sitting in his hosiery shop,” Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General Anand Kumar told ANI. “We hope to nab the criminals as soon as possible. The district magistrate and senior superintendent of police of Kanpur Nagar are already at the spot.” Kumar added that two police teams had been formed to investigate the case.

This is the second time this month that a journalist has been killed in the country. Sudip Datta Bhaumik, a journalist who worked with Bengali newspaper Syandan Patrika, was killed allegedly by the bodyguard of a Tripura State Rifles officer, near Agartala on November 21.

Attacks on journalists in India have been on the rise. On September 22, Journalist KJ Singh and his mother were found murdered at their house in Mohali. The Punjab Police have set up a Special Investigation Team to look into their deaths. The same month, journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot dead at her home in Rajarajeshwarinagar area in Bengaluru.
