Uncategorized

New Delhi: The Vice President of India, Shri M Venkaiah Naidu called for waging a war against the growing incidence of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and urged the younger generation to shun sedentary lifestyle and undertake regular physical exercise to stay healthy.

Addressing the gathering after participating in the Yoga Camp organized by the Patanjali Yogpeeth of Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev in Hubbali today, he emphasized the need to transform movements such as the Fit India and yoga into people’s movements and make India a healthy and happy nation.

With about 60 per cent of India’s population below the age of 35 years, Shri Naidu said that India was poised to realize a huge demographic dividend. “However, the need of the hour is for the youth to be healthy in a holistic manner”, he added.

“Yoga is the cheapest medicine for your health”, he told the youth.

Pointing out that the economic burden of non-communicable diseases in terms of lost productivity and expenses for treatment, among others, in India has been projected to amount to 6.2 trillion Dollars during the period of 2012-2030, he said that Yoga practice would have a beneficial effect on people, especially at a time when sharp rise in lifestyle diseases is being witnessed.

Talking about the impact of yoga on the world, Shri Naidu said that the massive participation of people from all over the world during the International Yoga Day celebrations annually was a testament to its global popularity.“Yoga is India’s greatest legacy and its most glorious gift to the world”, he said.

Maintaining that practicing Yoga should not remain limited to International Yoga Day alone, he advised people to practice Yoga regularly. This will help in maintaining a balanced attitude in all situations, he added.

Observing that the ever-mounting pressure, wayward lifestyle and changing food habits have resulted in youth suffering from physical and psychological disorders, Shri Naidu said, “We need a transformation in the way we live, in the way we think and in the way we interact with our fellow human beings and Mother Nature. I believe that Yoga will be a powerful tool to bring about the desired transformation in people who practice it regularly’’.

He said that protection of nature and preservation of culture together would lead us to a better future.

He complimented Baba Ramdev and the Patanjali Yogpeeth and many other yoga trainers and gurus, who have been making a great contribution towards making India healthy by popularizing Yoga and meditation.

Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Coal & Mines, Shri Pralhad Joshi and others were present at the Yoga session conducted by Baba Ramdev Ji of Patanjali Yogpeeth.

The Following is the full text of the speech:

I am extremely happy to participate in the Yoga Camp organized by the Patanjali Yogpeeth of Yoga guru Baba Ramdev ji, who has taken yoga to the nook and corner of the country and made it easy for everybody.

My good wishes to the people of the beautiful town of Hubballi on a pleasant morning as we all gather here to practice Yog Asanas under the supervision of Shri Baba Ramdev.

As we all are aware, yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ derives from Sanskrit and means to join or to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness. Yoga brings unity between mind and body.

Yoga is India’s greatest legacy, its most glorious gift to the world. Thanks to the efforts of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, it is now being celebrated by the world.

With about 60 percent of our population below the age of 35 years, India is poised to realize a huge demographic dividend. However, the need of the hour is for the youth to be healthy in a holistic manner. The problems affecting the youth such as overweight or depression can be avoided totally by the daily practice of yoga asanas.

It is essential because the youth are suffering from lack of self-control, self-confidence, and coordination between body and mind. Ever-mounting pressure, wayward lifestyle and changing food habits have resulted in youth suffering from physical and psychological disorders. In the long run, they are leading to life-threatening diseases.

Our ancestors had shown the simplest remedy for these lifestyle disorders. And that is the Science of Yoga. Yoga occupies a prominent place in 64 ancient arts.

In December 2014, the United Nations had declared June 21 as ‘International Day of Yoga’ as proposed by India and the same was endorsed by a record 175 member states.

The resolution passed by the United Nations noted: “the importance of individuals and populations making healthier choices and following lifestyle patterns that foster good health.”

Yoga is more than physical activity. Late B. K. S. Iyengar, said: “Yoga cultivates the ways of maintaining a balanced attitude in day-to-day life and endows skill in the performance of one’s actions.”

The massive participation of people from all over the world during the International Yoga Day celebrations annually is a testament to its global popularity.

The society we live in is in need of a transformation.

We need a transformation in the way we live, in the way we think and in the way we interact with our fellow human beings and Mother Nature. I believe that Yoga will be a powerful tool to bring about the desired transformation in people who practice it regularly.

Stressful workplaces, rise in environmental pollution, changing lifestyle and eating habits are impacting the health of our youth population.

Yoga practice will have a beneficial effect on people, especially at a time when we are witnessing a sharp rise in lifestyle diseases like cardiovascular ailments, diabetes, hypertension, asthma and other respiratory diseases as well as cancers.

The economic burden of the Non- communicable diseases in terms of lost productivity and expenses incurred for treatment, among others, in India have been projected to amount to $ 6.2 trillion during the period of 2012-2030 by the Harvard School of Public Health based on WHO data.

There is a need to wage a war against NCDs and develop a culture of focusing upon the disease- prevention measures.

A healthy diet, complemented with regular exercise along with practicing Yoga will go a long way in ensuring good health.

I compliment Shri Baba Ramdev and the Patanjali Yog peeth and many other yoga trainers and gurus, who have been making a great contribution towards making India healthy by popularizing Yoga and meditation.

I call upon people the younger generation to shun sedentary lifestyle and undertake a regular physical exercise to stay healthy.

As you all are aware, good health an essential precondition to prosperity and it is important for us to realize that only a healthy nation can become a wealthy nation.

As Swami Vivekananda said India needs youth having nerves of steel, muscles of iron and minds like a thunderbolt. Yoga would make the youth gain such powers. I convey my appreciation to Shri Baba Ramdev and his Yog Peeth for this endeavor and call upon all those gathered here to continue what they have learned in this Yoga camp and stay fit and healthy.
